Improper operation will severely shorten the service life of diesel generator sets. Below we sort out common incorrect operating behaviors in daily use:

Incorrect Operation 1: Running the diesel engine with insufficient engine oil

Insufficient oil supply to friction pairs will trigger abnormal wear or surface burning. For this reason, ensure adequate engine oil level before startup and during operation to avoid failures such as cylinder scuffing (拉缸) and bearing seizure (烧瓦) caused by oil shortage.

Incorrect Operation 2: Emergency shutdown under load, or immediate shutdown right after sudden load removal

Once the unit shuts down, cooling water circulation halts and heat dissipation drops sharply. Hot components without continuous cooling are prone to overheating for cylinder heads, cylinder liners and cylinder blocks, which may form cracks or make pistons expand excessively and get stuck inside cylinder liners.
Besides, shutting down without idle cooling leaves friction surfaces with inadequate oil film. Poor lubrication will aggravate wear upon the next restart.
Correct practice: unload the load before shutdown, lower the speed gradually and run the unit at no load for several minutes.

Incorrect Operation 3: Putting the unit under load immediately after cold startup without warm‑up

At cold startup, high oil viscosity and poor fluidity lead to insufficient pump delivery. Poor lubrication on friction surfaces causes rapid wear, even cylinder scuffing and bearing seizure.
Standard procedure: run at idle speed to raise temperature after cold startup; apply formal load only when engine oil temperature rises above 40℃. For mobile machinery, drive in low gears sequentially for mileage accumulation until oil temperature and oil supply stabilize before normal operation.

Incorrect Operation 4: Revving the throttle sharply right after cold startup

Sudden sharp acceleration spikes rotating speed drastically. Dry friction on contact surfaces causes severe abrasion; meanwhile, dramatic force fluctuations on pistons, connecting rods and crankshafts produce strong impacts and easily damage mechanical parts.

Incorrect Operation 5: Operating with insufficient cooling water or excessively high temperature of cooling water / engine oil

Insufficient cooling water weakens cooling efficiency and causes engine overheating. Overheated cooling water and engine oil impose heavy thermal load on cylinder heads, cylinder liners, piston assemblies and valves: mechanical properties like strength and toughness decline sharply, part deformation expands, fitting clearances shrink and component wear accelerates, which may eventually cause cracks or part jamming.
Unit overheating also worsens combustion performance: fuel injectors work abnormally with poor atomization and increased carbon deposits.
